Google's Veo 3 Brings Sound to Text-to-Video AI

The text-to-video field just got a lot louder. Google's Veo 3 can now generate clips that arrive with their own audio, including dialogue, voice-over, and sound effects. The model comes out of Google's own DeepMind division, and the company claims Veo 3 turns text prompts into video with noticeably improved quality alongside synchronized speech and audio. That puts Google a step ahead in the AI video race, since OpenAI's Sora has yet to bolt sound onto its system.

Beyond spoken lines and effects, Veo 3 also layers in ambient noise and background music. Google says the model tracks text prompts and sequences of actions with greater fidelity. Feed it the prompt "a paper boat sets sail in a rain-filled gutter" and it returns exactly that, framed as a close-up: water streams along, and the little boat even tips as it slides into the gutter. Compared with earlier versions, Veo 3 carries a crispness that makes the footage read less like AI output. In some respects, that is genuinely unsettling.

Google also ships an AI filmmaking app

With AI video tools like Veo 3 proliferating, there is an obvious downside: some people will use them to push disinformation and deliberately mislead the public. For now, telling an AI clip apart from real footage is still reasonably doable. Lip movement and voice-overs tend to lag slightly behind the actor's facial expressions, and there is an uncanny quality to how the subjects move and blink. Their motion feels too slow or too smooth, unlike anything captured on a real camera in films and shows.

On the visual side, many AI clips, including some from Veo 3, render the background with a blur that makes the subject pop, almost as if the software is leaning on a smartphone-style "portrait" mode. Google has also launched Flow, an AI filmmaking app built around Veo 3. Inside Flow, creators can steer camera motion, angles, and perspective, extend existing shots, and stitch transitions between viewpoints. Full access to Google's toolset, Veo 3 included, currently requires the Google AI Ultra subscription, which runs roughly 125 USD per month.
